Recovery Is More Than Counting Days 🗓️

One of the interesting things about Gambler's Anonymous is that while the Yellow Book outlines twelve steps to recovery, only one of them explicitly mentions gambling. The other eleven focus on something much bigger: faith, personal growth, honesty, humility, relationships, and helping others.

Recovery isn't designed to keep gambling at the center of someone's life. It's a forward-looking process that helps people learn how to live life again, rather than constantly measuring it against the last time they gambled.

As recovery progresses, a person's life shouldn't remain in constant reference to their last bet. Focusing too heavily on a specific date can create the false impression that recovery is simply an ongoing payment for the past.

There’s much more to life than that.

Eventually, the focus shifts to living with purpose, meaning, and connection. As Sal likes to say, “living a life so rewarding, gambling no longer fits.”
