🍴Food for Thought: Recovery is not a Life Sentence

Taking responsibility is essential to recovery and to living well. Living under a permanent sentence of guilt isn't.

Making amends isn't about proving we're sorry forever. It's about acknowledging the past, making things right where we can, and continuing to become someone who no longer lives that way.

Over the years, I've met many people who carry around what almost feels like a "lifetime amends." Even after years of honesty, growth, and doing the next right thing, they still feel like they have to keep paying. While that mindset ultimately comes from within, it can be fueled or reinforced by a partner or family members who continue to view them primarily through the lens of who they used to be rather than who they've become.

They continue apologizing, accepting treatment they no longer deserve, or believing they should never fully move beyond who they once were.

I don't believe that's what recovery asks of us.

Recovery should create healthier relationships, not permanent emotional probation. If someone continues to do the work, there comes a point where recovery transitions from paying for the past to building the future.

That's not about minimizing what's happened. It's about honoring the work that's been done, allowing trust to continue being rebuilt, and creating space for both the individual and the relationship to move toward a fuller, shared joy of living.
