Money, Relapse, and Recovery: Looking Back on the Journey with Louis Ruggiero

Gambling addiction is not about the money.

On the very popular Nothing's Off the Table podcast with Louis Ruggiero, Sal discusses how his final relapse in 2018 didn’t come with the dramatic ending that might be expected. It wasn't a financially devastating moment that finally made him stop. Instead, it was his emerging realization that when gambling, living life felt dimmer in all areas, gradually draining the joy from every part of his life. His work, friendships, and even more intimate partnerships became dull. Clearly recognizing this reality gave him the added zeal to return to recovery with a full commitment.

Sal & Louis also explored an often-unspoken challenge in 12-step fellowships: how the shame of returning after a relapse and introducing yourself as being "back on Day One" can discourage people from seeking the support they need due to shame and perceived judgement from other members.

The discussion challenges the idea that abstinence alone is the measure of recovery. As Louis points out, there are people with 20, 30, or even 40 years of abstinence who have stopped gambling without experiencing the deeper personal growth that recovery is meant to bring. Recovery communities can unintentionally place too much emphasis on length of abstinence, creating an unspoken hierarchy where those with the most time are often seen as the most successful, when time alone does not equate to a quality recovery experience.

The ultimate goal is to become someone who lives a life so rewarding that gambling simply no longer fits.
