WE PARTNER WITH YOU — NOT PREACH TO YOU

A NOTE FROM SAL

The roots of The Recovery Partners began growing many years ago through my own path of personal recovery.

As I began to find my footing — and eventually to thrive — I formed deep connections with others on similar journeys. Those relationships were built on friendship, mutual respect, and a shared reverence for the joy and abundance that can emerge on the other side of gambling. We were united by a simple belief: that a life free from addiction isn’t just possible — it can be joyful, vibrant, and deeply rewarding.

Over time, I also witnessed how elusive sustained abstinence can be. Even among those who managed to stop gambling, I often saw lives still marked by anxiety, emotional pain, or a lingering sense of flatness. I recognized that place because I’d been there myself. And as my own recovery deepened into something more balanced and grounded, I felt drawn to help others find it too — not just freedom from gambling, but a deeper kind of freedom rooted in peace, connection, and purpose.

A close friend once said that gambling addiction, painful as it was, became the on-ramp to a spiritual and practical life far more fulfilling than anything he had imagined — even before the first bet. That perspective stayed with me.

One of my favorite reminders is: “A joy shared is a joy doubled; a trouble shared is one halved.” Over time, that idea became central to my philosophy of recovery — not as a fixation on what went wrong, but as a forward-looking process grounded in gratitude, community, whole-person growth, and true partnership.

That philosophy eventually coalesced into The Recovery Partners — not as a brand-new concept, but as a natural extension of work I’d been doing for years: walking alongside others, sharing practical tools, and offering hope through lived experience.

While traditional recovery paths have helped many people find stability, I’ve also seen where they can fall short. The Recovery Partners exists to help fill those gaps by focusing on whole-person growth and helping people build lives defined not by gambling, but by meaning, connection, and real joy.

I’m honored to share this journey with you — both the spirit behind it and the practical tools we continue to use every day to live full, connected, and joyful lives.

WELCOME TO THE RECOVERY PARTNERS

HOW THIS APPROACH IS DIFFERENT —
AND WHY THAT MATTERS

This work is not clinical. I’m not a doctor or a licensed therapist — and I don’t pretend to be.

What does ground this approach is lived experience. The Recovery Partners was shaped through years of navigating the pain, secrecy, and chaos of gambling addiction — and then building full, happy lives beyond it. The guidance offered here comes from real-world recovery, not theory alone.

That lived experience didn’t happen in a vacuum. Along the way, I’ve spent years in therapy, engaged deeply with recovery communities, explored spiritual and philosophical traditions, and studied practical tools for emotional regulation, behavior change, and decision-making. What emerged wasn’t just recovery as it’s often understood. It was a broader, more integrated way of understanding myself — and how real change actually happens.

The approach draws from what actually works: traditional recovery programs, professional therapy, spiritual practices, behavioral and cognitive tools, and a fair amount of honest trial and error. Over time, those elements were distilled into a flexible, compassionate framework focused on sustainable, long-term change.

To be clear, this work isn’t meant to replace clinical therapy, medical treatment, or other professional support. When additional therapeutic care would be helpful, it’s encouraged and supported. What’s offered here is different: grounded, relatable guidance rooted in lived experience and a commitment to walk alongside people who are ready to take meaningful steps forward.

SAL GUARINO

COACH & GUIDE

Sal Guarino is a life coach, writer, and longtime New Yorker living in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. His second-greatest superpower—just behind sniffing out the best restaurants anywhere—is his deep, instant empathy for others, a gift he credits to his mother.

  • Sal has been drawn to helping others since the age of 18, combining a BA in Psychology with decades of eclectic life experience and hard-won insight. At just 22, he became one of New York State’s youngest-ever Credentialed Alcoholism Counselors. His approach blends candor, compassion, and a bit of classic East Coast edge — all in service of helping others find freedom and clarity.

Though he’s spent the last 24 years in digital advertising, helping companies grow by cultivating human potential, Sal never left the heart of the helping professions. His life is grounded in a close-knit circle of spiritually dedicated friends, and he believes deeply in recovery as a journey toward emotional abundance, not just abstinence.

If handed a magic wand, you’d find him strolling San Miguel’s cobblestone streets with his wife Alejandra, swapping stories with his two adult daughters, coaching others toward lasting change, singing a cappella standards at local karaoke, and savoring great food with great company.

Sal is proud to bring his lived experience, creative spirit, and wholehearted commitment to The Recovery Partners.

FREEDOM IS JUST ONE WAVE AWAY.
